Travel Itinerary: 21 days in Vietnam

First time in Asia and first time in Vietnam. This adventure will always keep a special place in my memory. We started in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City in the south of the country and made it all the way to its northern part. It was quite tiring as I recall but totally worth it ! This is an example of our itinerary :

Day 1 & 2 : Ho Chi Minh City – Arrival to the city in the beginning of the afternoon. Discovering streets around the hotel and booking a 2-day excursion to the Mekong river. During the second day : ancient colonial centre, Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Central post office, municipal theatre, Cho Lon (Big Market), Binh Tay Market, Phuoc An Hoi Quan Pagoda.

Day 3 & 4 : Delta of the Mekong river – Pick-up at the hotel and the beginning of the 2-day trip with a local travel agency in the morning. Our visit consisted of following visits: fruit farm with a little concert of traditional music, small family business fabricating coconut candies, row-boat trip in mangrove swamp, Cai Rang floating market, rice paper and noodles making. The hotel accommodation was arranged in Can Tho that can be visited in the evening. Return to Saigon in the afternoon.

Day 5 : Ho Chi Minh City  – Walking around the city and enjoying the atmosphere on the banks of the Saigon river. Departure for Nha Trang in the evening (by train).

Day 6 & 7 : Nha Trang – Arrival to Nha Trang early in the morning. Enjoying the beach and the sea. Visiting Po Nagar and Long Son pagoda. 1-day boat trip to several islands with a possibility of snorkeling. Departure for Hoi An in the evening (by train).

Day 8 – 10 : Hoi An – Arrival in the morning. Enjoying the streets of this ancient city, the beach and the sea. Having some clothes made by a local tailor.

Day 11 & 12 : Hue – Departure in the morning from Hoi An and arrival to Hue around noon (by bus). Visiting imperial city in the afternoon. The next day, one day cruise on the Perfume river and visit of most famous imperial tombs.

Day 13 & 14 : Hanoi – Departure in the morning from Hue and arrival to Hanoi around noon (by plane). Cathedral St-Joseph. Long Bien bridge. Hoan Kiem lake. Ngoc Son temple. Departure for Lao Cai in the evening (by train).

Day 15 & 16 : Sapa – Arrival to Lao Cai in the morning. Transfer to Sa Pa. First day a short trek in the afternoon with a local guide and second day a longer one of about 14 km in the scenery of rice paddies. Departure for Hanoi in the evening (by train).

Day 17: Hanoi – Arrival to Hanoi early in the morning. West lake. Quan Tranh temple. Tran Quoc pagoda. Temple of Literature. Puppet theatre on water.

Day 18: Hoa Lu – 1-day trip to Ninh Binh province with row-boat excursion and a visit of several temples. Return to Hanoi in the evening.

Day 19 & 20 : Halong Bay – Pick-up at the hotel and the beginning of the 2-day trip with a local travel agency in the morning. Visit of Surprising cave. Kayaking in the Halong bay. Discovering of floating fishermen villages. Relaxing on the deck and enjoying the sunset. Night spent on a typical boat. Return to Hanoi the next day in the afternoon.

Day 21: Hanoi – Last shopping and breathing in the atmosphere of “36 streets”. Leaving Hanoi and Vietnam next day in the morning.
