My blog about travel adventures and a lot more.
France is famously known for its cuisine and people come from all around the world to taste it. And there is a good reason for it !
If you have already visited the country and had a chance to eat with French friends, you must have noticed that they were able to spend hours at a table analysing a perfume, shape and taste of each meal. Or at least most of them still do so. Therefore in order to satisfy their demanding clients, chefs keep on being creative and do their best to surprise.
You can eat well in all regions. And what is really great is that it is not going to be the same. Each region has its specialties and will serve you different things on your plate. Burgundy, Savoy or Provence. And what about the capital of the gastronomy ? Lyon ?
There are 2 main types of restaurants in Lyon (according to my observation). Those called “bouchon” (only here). They serve traditional cuisine and have a special atmosphere of a “grandmother’s dining room”. Tables are usually close to each other. There is a lot of old pictures and photos on the walls and some antique furniture makes room very cosy. You can eat very well in these establishments and for very reasonable prices. And then, there are those that combine traditional cuisine with some new approach. They are more creative in the presentation of their meals, menus, used ingredients and the decoration of the space. And I can tell you that many surprises are waiting for you here. Prices are about the same.
So when in Lyon, do not hesitate to visit its tourist attractions but most importantly do not miss an opportunity to spend some time at a dinner table 😉
And here is one advice that is true for Lyon but also for other French cities. If you have a possibility, ask people to recommend you some addresses and if you do not know anybody, there is still internet and its forums. And why am I saying that ? Even in the country of gastronomy, you can find bad restaurants. Usually in a very touristy areas. However, sometimes an excellent restaurant is only two streets away. And believe me, very often it costs you the same.
Bonus for the end ! These are the restaurants that we tried and liked in Lyon : Bouchon des Filles (traditional), L’Ourson qui Boit (fusion), Toute une Histoire, Brasserie Paul Bocuse Le Sud (traditional, brasserie), L’Archange (fusion), Mon Bistrot à Moi (traditional, bistro).
Bon appétit !
