My blog about travel adventures and a lot more.
What: Fête des Lumières or Festival of Lights
When: December 6-9, 2012
Where: everywhere in Lyon
How much: free
I lived in Lyon for some time and was lucky to be a witness of this great event last year. The whole town had a special atmosphere that you could experience only around this time of the year. People put candles outside of their windows and boutique windows were enlightened by candles as well. Some boulevards were reserved for pedestrians only and there was a party spirit everywhere.
It all started by an overwhelming fireworks over the Rhône river on a Thursday evening. A spectacle not only for children … Streets boarded with stands offering food and drinks. Shops still open at 10 pm and its owners playing loud music to entertain people passing by. Some of them even organised small fashion shows. The whole neighbourhood was celebrating in a unison. Whole families enjoyed moments together. Children (with a special permission to stay up late – valid only for these few days), parents and grand-parents.
On Saturday evening, we went out with some friends that came to Lyon especially for this occasion. We started with some aperitif on the terrace of a café, watched the light show with bated breath on ‘Place des Terreaux‘, then danced to the rhythm of music with cups of warm wine in our hands in front of ‘Gare Saint-Paul’, crossed the ‘Vieux Lyon’ quarter to admire colourful transformations of ‘Cathédral Saint-Jean’ and finished our tour at the ‘Bellecour‘ square with a breath-taking view on ‘Basilique de Fourvière‘.
So what can I say more to convince you ? Oh, I almost forgot. We went to a restaurant after. You can eat very well in Lyon (read one of my previous articles). However, reservation is strongly recommended during this very busy weekend.
Do not hesitate anymore ! Buy your bus-train-flight tickets and go !
